Programs
In recognition of Memorial Day and in celebration of May being Older Americans Month, the City of North Liberty, Solon Retirement Village, and the University of Iowa's Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence are sponsoring a free 55+ Connections Lunch and post-lunch Civil War history performance at Hy-Vee Center at Centennial Park (1565 St Andrews Dr, North Liberty). Food will be served at 11:20 am. Meals are limited to persons registered for lunch, so please reserve your spot on RecDesk or by calling (319) 626-5716. Enrollment begins May 1.
Friday, May 29 meal, sponsored by Solon Retirement Village:
Hy-Vee Catering
* fried chicken
* mashed potatoes & gravy
* buttered corn
Not interested in lunch? No registration required. Arrive at noon for a free performance of "Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S. Grant" by Pete Grady, former Iowa Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General. Performance run time is approximately 70 minutes.
This event is made possible by a grant through Humanities Iowa, a private nonprofit, and the State Historical Society, Inc. of Iowa. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa brings humanities programs into the heart of Iowa communities.
"Unconditional Surrender" features period music, photographs, and cartoons as Grant reviews his life as he struggles to complete his memoirs just days before his death at the age of 63. The program is an informative, humorous, and touching portrayal of the victorious General whose strategy and tenacity won the Civil War, the President who struggled to rebuild his nation after the war, and the husband and father whose final efforts were devoted to the financial support of his wife and family.
For more information, reach out to North Liberty Assistant Adult Librarian Corrie Brase at cbrase@northlibertyiowa.org or (319) 626-5608.
